Christopher Matthew Liberty was born on December 26, 1965. His name was given to acknowledge his arrival into this world the day after the Christian celebration of Christ’s birth. The third son of Frank Emery Liberty and Celia Sara (Ingenito) Liberty, both now deceased, Chris was raised on Long Island in the suburbs of New York City. A former resident of East Meadow, Wantagh, and Bellport in New York, Chris made his home for the past 12 years in Boerne, Texas. His life was one of quiet devotion and a deep commitment to helping those who are underserved and underestimated.

From his earliest days, Chris had a knack for fixing things, which grew out of his insatiable curiosity to understand how they worked. As a teen, he could be found crawling under and over various cars, or taking apart a lawn mower, or rebuilding a carburetor. His inquisitiveness and mechanical aptitude led to a 30-year career as an auto mechanic with various dealerships, including Mitsubishi, Kia, and Toyota. During this time, he became not only an expertly skilled technician, but a strong advocate for workers’ rights, serving among other roles, as union shop steward.

Many who know Chris also know that he was a talented chef who enjoyed preparing meals for friends and family – everything from elaborate Thanksgiving dinners to smoky, melt-in-your-mouth Texas barbeque. Chris will also be missed as a helper and a doer, always willing to offer guidance or lend a hand with a particularly difficult project. He prided himself on solving problems and contributing meaningfully to his community.

In 2013, Chris met his sweetheart Lori on a dating app. He decided to filter by highest match rather than distance, and she was at the top of the list! He nervously sent her a message, and that was the beginning of a wonderful long distance relationship. Chris relocated to Boerne, TX in 2014. He always said he was meant to be a Texan.

Chris worked for Toyota of Boerne until an opportunity for change arose. He took a leap of faith and accepted a position at Samuel V. Champion High School in Boerne as an Automotive Teacher. He wasn’t sure he could be a Teacher, but found a great Mentor who encouraged him at every turn. He discovered he actually had a gift for teaching and loved sharing his skills & knowledge with his students. And he was a strong believer in career and technical education. He was a dedicated Teacher who cared deeply about his students and his CHS family.

An animal lover at heart, Chris had a particular soft spot for misfit creatures. He cared for many pets throughout his life, and they all brought him so much happiness & love. At the time of his passing, he & Lori shared their love with their fur babies Milo, Otis, Phoebe, Jax and Moxie.

Though Chris was a quiet man, he did profess faith in Jesus Christ and went home to be with his Lord and Savior on September 15, 2026. While the paths he walked were sometimes private and distant, we will remember Chris with grace and gratitude for the ways in which he quietly touched our lives with his deeply rooted values, his subtle humor, and his good heart. His playful impressions and silly voices could bring smiles to any room.

Throughout Chris’s lengthy illness, so many in our community rallied around him with prayers, cards, donations, hospital visits, love & support. Family, friends, students past & present, his CHS family, neighbors, and even people he didn’t know. He was truly overwhelmed and touched by how many people cared about him. It was such a blessing he was able to experience all of this before he passed. We are so grateful to CHS and Boerne ISD for being extremely supportive throughout Chris’s health challenges.

Chris is survived by his wife, Lori Burchart, her daughter Carlie and grandson Hudson of Boerne, TX; his three children, Zachary Liberty of Orlando, FL, Sara Liberty of Massapequa, NY, and Emma Liberty (Josh Lee) of Columbus, OH; and his three brothers Frank Liberty (Terri) of Saylorsburg, PA, Tom Liberty (Erik Moore) of Boston, MA, and Perry Liberty (Bonnie Peritz) of White Plains, NY, as well as six nieces and nephews, and many cousins, friends, colleagues and students.

A Celebration of Chris’s Life will be held on October 28th from 4:45-6pm at the Champion High School auditorium. Everyone who loves & cares about Chris are welcomed.
