Obituary

Rafael Octavio DePena, affectionately known as Ralph, passed away on May 9, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 69.

Born on July 9, 1955, Ralph was born in Montreal, Canada and maintained a deep connection to his Dominican roots, especially the beaches of Sosúa in Puerto Plata province. A passionate and competitive surfer, he found joy and solace in the waves—whether at his favorite local surf spots in Corpus Christi or abroad.

In the early days of his life in New York City, Ralph became a founding member of the Guardian Angels overseeing Harlem.

Ralph is remembered with love by his brothers, Bolivar DePena II and Arturo DePena; and his sister, Odette Kellerman; and his daughter Ciera Pakebusch. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Bolivar DePena Sr., and his mother, Odette Trujillo.

Known for his vibrant personality and infectious humor, Ralph brought laughter and warmth wherever he went. He was a character in the best sense—full of life, stories, and an ever-present smile that endeared him to many.

Friends and family will gather to celebrate Ralph's life with a Paddle Out memorial at North Packery Channel on June 1st at 1:00 p.m., honoring his love for the ocean and the surfing community that meant so much to him.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort and joy to those whose lives he touched.
